Forum: Solitude. 19 April 2014
Do you crave being on your own, precious time to take stock and think things through? Or do you loathe being alone and always try to be around other people? This week the Forum explores solitude: when its a blessing and when its a blight. Joining Bridget Kendall are New Zealand novelist Eleanor Catton, whose her latest novel is a world littered with loners who've abandoned friends and families in search of gold; Chinese American writer Yiyun Li whose new work also explores solitude: as a way to avoid facing uncomfortable questions about the past; and New York high school teacher Diana Senechal who argues for a resurgence of solitary learning.

Forum: Uncharted. 12 April 2014
How many places are there on Earth which are still off the map? Can you chart or at least capture - the clouds in the sky? And when the first complete atlas of continents and islands appeared at the end of the 19th Century, what did it mean for native peoples, empires and the boundaries of our imagination? Some of the questions Samira Ahmed explores in the company of historian Rosalind Williams, social geographer Alastair Bonnett and artist Berndnaut Smilde.

Forum: Counterfeiting 05 Apr 2014
Fakes, forgeries and copies: what's the difference? And why don't more people complain when their medicine doesn't work? Bridget Kendall is joined by art expert and dealer Philip Hook, art historian Winnie Wong and anti-counterfeit drugs entrepreneur Bright Simons.

Forum: Spontaneity. 29 March 2014
Can you train to be spontaneous? Ancient Chinese sages thought you could, reminds us Edward Slingerland, professor of Asian Studies at the University of British Columbia. Psychologist Daniel Goleman says that while you cant command people to have a spontaneous thought, you may be able to train your mind to harness spontaneous thinking better. And Mary Robertson, Emeritus Professor of Neuropsychiatry at University College London brings her insights from treating Tourettes Syndrome.

Forum: Social Mobility 22 March 2014
Are we too complacent about the speed and scale of social mobility? In this weeks Forum, Jo Fidgen hears some startling new research on how painfully slow social mobility really is, even in enlightened regions such as Scandinavia. Economic historian Gregory Clark has been finding out what your surname says about your chances of self-improvement. Sociologist Alan Bairner has been examining social mobility through sport: who gets to play at the top level, and what does that do to their social status? And economist Thomas Piketty has been analysing reams of data to find out why its nearly always paid more to invest family money than to work.
