Spawned from America’s finest city, San Diego, Ca. Black Cotton (BC) is destined to cause a stir in the ever-changing culture of hip-hop. BC is comprised of three talented emcees: Jimbo Slice, Leo-Nardo and music producer extraordinaire, Marre-L (all childhood cronies). To the members of Black Cotton, the group name represents foundation and wealth. The United States was largely founded on the agricultural business of producing and selling cotton, which in turn meant wealth at the time. To BC, wealth is also what you make it: family, community, relationships, life, memories etc.
BC’s style is described as real Hip Hop with an R&B swagger, wearing a conscious kufi in a gangsta stance. The members of BC are intelligent enough to know their music cannot please everyone, but through their unique style, they will definitely try. Many say that BC is different, that their style is “throw back Hip Hop”. Others say BC’s lyrics are real and that their beats remain true to the meaning of Hip Hop. Biography
SynCity, originally known for her skills as a battle break-dancer, the former Foxy Brown backup dancer made her transition into deejaying professionally in 2005. A well known and respected veteran, DJ Roc Raida of the world renowned DJ crew The X-Ecutioners passed along his turntables and mixer set to SynCity as a gift. The act changed her life.
SynCity has appeared on numerous media outlets such as MTV's Mixtape Mondays, BET's RapCity The Basement, SHADE 45/ SIRIUS SATELLITE, AOL Radio, and Montreal's K103. She has performed around the globe with Russell Simmons' female R&B group Black Buddafly, Danity Kane of MTV's Making of the Band 3, Nicole Wray during her stint on Jay-Z's imprint, Roc-A-Fella Records/ Def Jam, DJ Cassidy's artist, O'Neal McKnight (SRC/Universal), and producer-turned-artist, 88-Keys, with whom album is executive produced by Grammy Winner, Kanye West.
Solidifying her reputation, SynCity was recognized for her mixtapes by the Justo's Mixtape Awards, a legendary ceremony where stars like Diddy, 50 Cent, Wu-Tang Clan and more have walked across the stage to accept their titles. She is a 4 X nominated DJ for the categories Rookie of the Year in 2005 and Best Female DJ in 2005, 2006, and again for the 2007 awards.
Her true love for the DJ artform comes out when she rocks parties. Dazzling the eclectic crowds in the most trendiest clubs for events like MTV's Video Music Award after-parties and NBA All-Star Weekend, to entertaining at the Rucker Park Basketball Tournaments in Harlem, she has proven to be well versed for various genres of crowd. SynCity has headlined a hip-hop festival at Club Bon Bon in Shanghai, China and was also part of the National Budlight/Maxim Magazine Tour in 2006.
SynCity was part of the 20-Cities 2K Sports Sponsored Tour called "Fresh Rhymes and Videotape" in June 2008. She is currently the new official DJ for the monthly upscale event, SKIN PARTY (www.skinparty.com), and continues spinning at the hottest clubs in New York City. Sophia Lin a.k.a. DJ Hustle-Lin. Model. DeeJay. Gogo.
She does it all!
Born in Washington D.C. and raised in Silver springs and Potomac, Maryland and later Kansas City. Recently Sophia moved to Los Angeles to further her acting career.
In her teenage years, Sophia started modeling by working at bikini shows, hair shows, fashion shows at malls, special event and car shows. She was then introduced into DJ'ing by DJ Shaunflo, as she would be his back-up and relief DJ at parties and clubs. "Since I love music just as much that I thought it would be pretty hot to have a girl DJ!,"Sophia smiles. Her original DJ name was 'DJ Sofiyah,' as in hot like fiyah!"
As she got older, priorities changed and Sophia concentrated on working and school. She finished school and attained her real estate license with Keller Williams.
But the spotlight lured Sophia back in and she started "shadow dancing" (behind a screen) at Voodoo Nightclub at Harrah's Casino. Soon Sophia worked as gogo dancer at every club in the Kansas City area. "I'm one of the OG's (original gangsters) of the gogo scene in the Midwest," Sophia says. As she worked in the clubs Sophia realized her old passion to DJ. "So I said wait, I know how to DJ and I love it!" So she revived her DJ career and decided that she needed to change her name up, "…Kinda like how many times Prince and P.Diddy did! So I chose 'DJ Hustle-Lin' because it had my last name 'Lin' and 'Hustle' (like the movie Hustle & Flow)." Club promoters soon hired her to DJ all over from Seattle to Miami up to Canada and down to Las Vegas.
At the same time Sophia also boosted her modeling career with many photoshoots for various publications and features. She got into spokesmodeling at SEMA, Hot Import Nights, and various events around the USA. "It's fun and exhausting at the same time. But its all worth it! Networking, traveling, meeting new people, being in the spotlight and putting a smile on peoples faces....that's what its all about!"
With the success there have been obstacles and hardships along the way. "Life hasn't been the easiest thing for me. I've been through everything a fifty year old has! except children!" Sophia laughs. In the past year, Sophia went through surgery to remove tumors and finally release her from the pain she had been coping with for some time. "So I appreciate life more than many people do."
What's next for Sophia? "As long as I'm taking ten steps forward and no steps backwards. That is all that matters, but I'd really like to pursue becoming an actress and a performer. I'm still on the pursuit to happYness!"
