Kathy Marks on Pitcairn Island: A Paradise Lost
Complete video at: http://fora.tv/2008/05/24/Kathy_Marks_Pitcairn_Lost

Journalist Kathy Marks discusses the strange society of Pitcairn Island, a tiny, isolated, South Pacific colony of descendants of the mutineers from the HMS Bounty, and the subject of a recent series of internationally-publicized rape trials.

-----

Pitcairn Island -- where Fletcher Christian's descendants live -- was until recently a rarely visited British outpost perched in the South Pacific; a tropical paradise.

In 2000, British police, alerted by unsettling reports of rape, descended on the island, one of the most isolated places on Earth and home to just 47 people, mostly related.

Their investigation developed into a major inquiry that uncovered widespread child sexual abuse dating back generations.

Scarcely a Pitcairn man was untainted by the allegations, and almost none of the women had escaped. Yet most residents, including victims' mothers, feigned ignorance, claiming that the abuse -- perpetrated on girls as young as three -- was part of their "way of life".

Pitcairn, it transpired, was a real-life Lord of the Flies story of a place without rules, a society gone badly astray.

Kathy Marks was one of a handful of journalists permitted to live on the island while she reported on the ensuing trials and witnessed Pitcairn's domestic workings first hand.

In Pitcairn: Paradise Lost she documents a society gone badly astray, leaving lives shattered, codes broken and a paradise truly lost - Sydney Writer's Festival

Kathy Marks is the Asia-Pacific correspondent for the UK's Independent, and is the author of the book, Pitcairn: Paradise Lost.

Jennifer Heldmann - How the Moon was Created
Complete video at: http://fora.tv/2008/10/07/Jennifer_Heldmann_The_Moon

NASA scientist Jennifer Heldmann describes the most popular theory of how the Earth's moon was formed.

-----

Let's talk about the moon.

In my opinion it's the best celestial body to observe ? it's big enough to see in captivating detail without a telescope and it doesn't thank you for your wonderment by burning out your eyeballs. And while it may lack the kaleidoscopic coloring, dynamic vitality, and exotic mystery of some of the other local orbs, our moon is the old friend we wouldn't want to lose.

Tonight we'll learn all about our trusty sidekick ? the theories on its formation, predictions about its future, its internal structure, its geological past and present, and the many ways in which it affects the earth.

We'll discover how the moon impacts our climate, how it got locked in a synchronous rotation with the earth, how tides work, and why some scientists suggest that without the moon life on earth may never have developed - Ask a Scientist

Dr. Jennifer Heldmann has worked closely with the Astrobiology Academy at NASA Ames Research Center for the past five years to conduct research regarding the habitability of other planets. Heldmann also worked at NASA Ames under the direction of Dr. Chris McKay on a variety of projects including extreme physical conditions supporting life in Antarctica, collecting experimental data regarding the soil chemistry of martian simulant soils, and conducting field work in the Mars analog environment of the Canadian High Arctic to study cold perennial springs flowing in polar desert conditions. Heldmann has also participated in simulated Mars missions by living in Mars habitat modules and is very excited for the promising future of Mars exploration. Heldmann is now working at the NASA Ames Research Center as a National Research Council Post-doctoral fellow during this very exciting time of solar system exploration.

Ian Plimer - Environmentalism Is the New Religion
Complete video at: http://fora.tv/2008/08/19/Would_We_Be_Better_Off_Without_Religion

Australian geologist Ian Plimer argues that, for many agnostics and atheists, the cause of environmentalism has replaced organized religion as a matter of personal faith.

-----

While the world's religions have inspired stunning acts of creation, they also have been implicated in some of the darkest deeds in human history.

If God cannot be blamed for such moments of evil, His priests and prophets at least have a case to answer.

So what might they say? That religion is unfairly blamed -- and that we should look to other factors? Admit that there are problems but argue that on balance the good outweighs the bad? That there is no alternative; that people need religion like they need air? - Intelligence Squared

Ian Plimer is Emeritus Professor of Earth Sciences at the University of Melbourne and Professor of mining geology at the University of Adelaide. He is a prominent critic of creationism, and is famous for a debate with creationist Duane Gish in which he asked his opponent to hold live electrical cables to prove that electromagnetism was 'only a theory'. He has published over 120 academic papers and six popular books. He is also a prominent member of the Australian Skeptics. In 2004 he was awarded the Calrk Medal by the Rioyal Society of NSW.
